The result of Kristallnacht

   In 1938, there was the "Kristallnacht". Before Kristallnacht the older people thought this can't go on, it is going to get better. But with Kristallnacht that finished, there was no future. After Kristallnacht, Mama applied to a Kindertransport, because Kindertransport was the result of Kristallnacht, before that of course it did not exist. And so she applied. It took a long time, it took from November to July, I had also to search for guarantees. I had relatives here who worked in a butcher establishment. They had a driver, and that driver had married a childless wife, so they wanted a child, and when the children transport came, they were willing to take somebody in. So my family found an accomodation with them. And then they had to guarantee, they were very poor, he was only a driver, to find 50 pounds was very difficult for them. Eventually they found 50 pounds and so I was to come over.
