Outsider Inside

"I wrote this book some twenty-five years ago. Thanks to the National Health Service I am now 82 years old. The tensions and contradictions that tore at me as a young man have become less destructive and I have been able to establish lasting relationships. Eventually I was able to find my identity and tell the world: 'Yes, I am a Jew and as a child I escaped from Nazi Germany.'

The loathing and hate which I experienced as a boy in Nazi Germany, the dislike of foreigners in England, and the racism I encountered in the British Army left me deeply ashamed and guilty. Asylum seekers and refugees today, especially those coming to this country as children and young people, are likely to struggle with similar problems. I had the amazing fortune to get to a good English school and later to a University – advantages which I might not have had I arrived today."*
