   We were refugees although we didn’t consider ourselves to be refugees. Then six months later, I was an ‘enemy alien’. I was classified as an enemy, which was hard to accept. They let us in at first because we wanted to get away from Germany and Hitler. Then, a couple of months later it was the opposite. I wanted to work at that time, but I wasn’t allowed to because I was an enemy.[return]    [forward]
