A N T I S E M I T I S M
You are always, how do you say it, suspicious ...

At first I went to school by tram and later by bicycle. Sometimes we walked, which took a good half an hour. I know that K. had problems. Maybe he looked Jewish with his dark hair. But I didn’t, I had blue eyes and was quite blond, very blond in fact. No one recognised me. No one beat me up. Later, maybe, when children were wearing uniforms and I wasn’t, then now and again they did. But I wasn’t afraid; if anything ever happened, I hit back.

We learnt pretty quickly from our parents that if someone asks you something, you say, “I don’t know.” That was just the same in later life, too. You are always, as it were, suspicious...You don’t say everything you know just because someone asks you. But as a child at school my life was more or less free.
