F A R E W E L L

I still have a whole lot of letters from my mother. In one of these letters, she uses a Yiddish word to imply danger; she writes: Tante Macke [the Nutty Auntie] will come to visit us soon. My father thankfully had already died already in 1939, while he was still at the Jewish hospital in Cologne, and didn’t have to go through the whole thing. That was lucky for him, dying there. My mother was still sending letters via Switzerland. Then they suddenly stopped coming.
