Watch out, they’re coming today

My father had various friends and on the days when the men were being collected up, someone phoned and said, “Watch out, they’re coming today!” My father went off straight away. The numbers 16 and 26 trams drove along the ‘Ring’ boulevards; my dad sat in the tram and when the people came to take him away, we put a large vase in the window and when the vase was in the window, it meant he couldn’t come home.

Here Lore is looking out of the house in Salierring in early summer 1939. In one of these windows, six months previously, the vase had been placed as a warning signal.
