I was only 13, so I went to school. The war started in 1939 and the people I lived with, the woman was a very nervous woman, an older person. She had experienced the Zeppelins in the First World War and the bombing of London with Zeppelins, so when war started, she immediately decided to go away from London and we went to Devon, to Torquay. I went to school in Torquay; it was a wonderful school, but only for three months. They could not afford to stay anymore because they were not very rich and so we came back to London and I went to school in the East End of London. That was a terrible school, a really terrible school. There was a culture of non achievement; I don't know wie man das übersetzt [how you translate that]. Everybody wanted to do bad, you know? And so in April 1940 I left school, I only had a few weeks, then I left school. I was fourteen. Zu dieser Zeit hat man die Schule mit vierzehn Jahren verlassen. [At that time young people left school at the age of fourteen.]
