We saw the V1 coming straight over

I left school in April and I started work, I think, in 1940 in summer, in the optical factory in London. I did not want to do this for my life. In that time in the war the university was functioning in the evening and on saturday so that people could work during the day. So I did my study in the evenings and on sundays and did my work during the day. And then in August the daylight bombing of London started, and being not a very valuable member of the factory, two young boys were sent on the roof to spot when anything was coming. So when we saw anything coming we pressed a button and everybody went into the cellar. We stayed up there in case there were incendiary bombs which we would throw over into the street from the roof. We did not have any incendiary bombs, but what we did see was the battle over London. We saw the aircraft, it was very interesting, we were young, we thought nothing could ever happen to us. Sometimes something was shot down, it was very interesting.
