K I N D E R T R A N S P O R T

In Holland there were ladies with hats and wooden clogs who came and offered us cocoa and chocolate, which was lovely. And on the way, there were German soldiers on the train when we were eating a sandwich, and they said, “Give us that, you don’t need it.” After that we always stood someone at the door before we ate, and when they saw the soldiers, they quickly called, “Stop, stop! Hide the sandwiches!” Then we spent a night on the boat and then we travelled by train. My brother was at Liverpool Street Station and as soon as he saw me, there was a kind of sign and it said on it: ‘Bovril is good for you.’ Bovril is a kind of essence you can make gravy from. And then he said to me, “Read it, go on, read it out to me!” And then I said, “Boffril ist goot for yoo!” And then he said, “Oh my god.”
